Online Gaming

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/04/19/AR2006041902617.html

for those of you who are too lazy to click and read, this is an article about one of the aspects of online gaming. it's a good read because it gives an insight of one part of online gaming that outsiders don't usually see: the fact that it brings people together. as a gamer, both online and offline, this hits close to home.

one of the things the article talks about is how some families and friends use online games to stay in touch. it's a way for them to stay together while they are physically far apart. i relate to this rather well because of the way my brother and i have stayed connected through online games. while i was away at college and he was home, we stayed in touch through warcraft 3. now that i'm at home and he's at college, we have guild wars.

why don't you guys just use the phone?
well, it's different. on the phone, it's just you and the other person, and all you do is talk. playing online games together is like hanging out. you're doing other stuff too, and the conversations come as an added bonus. other people can get involved too. it's spending time together in a different perceived world. after all, the world we're in is just a product of our senses. the online world is just a different state of mind.

the article also mentions how people meet each other through online games. it might sound kind of dorky, but i've met a lot of people through online games. for example, yung is a really good friend from columbia. however, we met and got close through warcraft, not because we went to the same school. you can learn a lot about a person's personality traits through their playstyle. maybe we wouldn't be as close if we hadn't pursued it, taking classes and martial arts together, but it was a good starting point. the article mentions how a guy got to know his son-in-law by the way he played, and i think it's true. a person's personality shines when he games. (yung might bring up the fact that when i played, i often nuked my own troops to achieve a greater goal or stabbed him in the back. you can... umm... disregard that...)

with all of this talk about the good points of online gaming, i should bring up the bad points too. you keep hearing about someone (usually in korea or taiwan) dying because they played an online game non-stop without sleeping or eating for days. a friend of mine told me how his neighbor's fiance spends all day and all night gaming, often neglecting her. (devil child that i am, i told him to go "comfort" her, but that's besides the point) as with all things, when gaming becomes an obsession, it becomes a bad thing.

this isn't really a problem for me, as gaming is just a hobby and i try to avoid becoming too engrossed in it. given the choice of playing a game or hanging out with people, i'll gladly hop into my car and drive into the city. but when you're stuck in dirty jersey on a week night with nothing to do, why not? besides, as a guild mate described it, an online game is like a glorified chat room. sometimes, when i'm busy with work at home, i do log on just to say hi to people and chat for a bit.

so here's to warcraft 3, guild wars, and literati for helping me stay in touch with people.

A First Time for Everything

unfortunately for me, i had my first car accident last night. before anyone gets worried, i'm fine. it wasn't a major accident. basically, a cab rear-ended me while i was making a turn and fled. yup. a hit-and-run. it wasn't such a bad hit though. i'm fine, and tiff, who was sitting in the passenger seat is fine as well.

mimi, on the other hand, didn't go unscathed. the hit dented and partially dislodged her rear-bumper. i took the whole thing off for safe measure. my poor baby is in the auto body shop now awaiting repairs. i'm glad the damage wasn't too bad. it was only the bumper (and my wallet). nothing else was damaged.

i think special props should go to tiff, who kept her head cool throughout the situation. yep, the strider had a momentary breakdown. i wasn't freaking out or anything, just wasn't thinking straight. anyway, thanks to tiff for keeping me calm and maintaining control.
